I don’t know about you, but I just can’t get enough of basic, all-over patterned quilts. Take one or two simple shapes, make them nice and big to show off pretty fabrics, and you have something sure to say “happy”. The Mod Shapes quilt totally does that, plus! you’ll learn a new technique with sewing half circles. It’s easy enough to make a quick quilt, super fun to sew, and ideal for large scale fabric prints.
There is now a video up on Color Girl YouTube that’s all you need to know to make this quilt. You’ll learn how to cut and sew the half circle units with the Classic Curves Ruler (don’t you love that they are full half circles so you don’t cut the prints?!) and a super easy technique for making flying geese. I walk you through my design process – this one has lots of options for layout alternatives and options to make yours unique – from fabric choice to final layout of shapes.
The inspiration for this quilt came from new fabrics I have in the shop: Speckled fabrics by Ruby Star Society are a colorful basic with subtle splatter pattern, and Midsommer is the latest from Pippa Shaw…think flower power, springtime colors and girly prints. The two collections are a perfect match, color-wise, and I love the combination of a basic print like Speckled with busier, larger prints like Midsommer features.

Bonus! can you tell that the ‘white’ background fabric isn’t all the same? I used a ton of scraps and stash in light prints in place of a solid, single cut there. So this quilt shows off fun new fabrics I couldn’t wait to sew with AND used lots of pieces from my stash, win-win!
To make one like mine, follow links above to get your colorful prints. If you want to go all in with your stash and scraps, you’ll need colorful fabrics for the half circles *minimum 4 1/4″ x 8 1/2″* and colorful fabrics for the flying geese *a 9 3/4″ square will make four geese units*. For the neutral background, you’ll need 5″ squares and 9″ x 5″ rectangles. Choose yardage to cut up or a variety of bits and scraps like I did. All measurements and cutting instructions, plus sewing and layout are included in the video.
It’s easy to adapt this project to your preferred size. The quilt shown above is 48″ x 56″, pieced with Aurifil thread. It has Hobbs 80/20 cotton batting inside and quilting by Darby Myers of Quilted Squid.
