It’s a great day when we get to see a new quilt pattern! Just in case you thought I’d forgotten all about curves, I’d like to introduce you to Flora.
You know I’ve been crushing on scrappy quilts lately, and the Flora quilt pattern continues that theme. It’s also for all of you just starting in quilting and adding to your skills toolbox. I wanted to start the year with some fun, basic quilt designs achievable for all quilters…and to make it easy to sew up our favorite fabrics!

If you have a favorite fat quarter or fat eighth bundle lurking around your stash, now might be the time to pull it out and turn those pretties into a finished quilt. The Flora (baby size, 40″ x 40″) above features fabrics from the Ruby Star Society collection Favorite Flowers.
All about Flora: this pattern was originally published in the beginner-friendly quilting mag, Quilts and More. Yes, even though it includes curves, this is a beginner friendly pattern. If you’ve had curves on your list to learn, Flora is the perfect pattern to get you started. Nice, big blocks mean you make progress quickly and the curves sew up easily due to perfect cutting with the Classic Curves Ruler. The Flora pattern includes three sizes, but can easily be modified to your preferred size by making more or fewer blocks and arranging them how you like.

My sample quilt was made with a bunch of Art Gallery Fabrics prints I had in my stash – you don’t need very big pieces so you probably have scraps that will work. One fat quarter will make three blocks. I like the cool combination of blue shades and green with pops of magenta. This would be so much fun on a small child’s first big kid bed! I like that the pieces are large enough that the quilt is quick to sew and shows off pretty colors and prints.

Flora requires use of the Classic Curves or Classic Curves Plus ruler – either one will work for this one – and includes live links to video demonstrations of the critical steps. If you haven’t watched a demo of the CCRuler, <click here> to see. Prepare to be amazed….you really CAN sew curves!
