I opened my calendar the other day and saw that June 2 is National Donut Day! Being the person that I am: a lover of sweet treats AND quilts, it seemed like we ought to do something to celebrate these two good things 😊
All weekend, June 2-4 my most donut shaped quilt pattern, Black Jack, will be 50% off. This is our chance to honor a truly delicious gastronomical treat in fabric and thread. Plus, you get to pull out your Classic Curves Ruler and put it to use! I promise this is a really easy- to-make pattern if you need inspiration to get started on your curved piecing.

Once when I showed this quilt at guild meeting show and tell, one of the members said the shapes reminded her of life preservers. I love it! this original version of the Black Jack quilt shows what you can do with great contrast: bright colors with bold black and white make for a really cheery quilt.

Of course, we have to see what it looks like in different fabrics! for this version, we don’t have such strong contrast so the shapes don’t stand out quite as much. I like how this one makes you want to keep looking over the whole quilt rather than having a main shape stand out. In this way the fabrics are more the star of the design, but the contrasting golden sections of the ‘donuts’ (or life preservers!) add a playful element. What do you think?
Enjoy the Black Jack pattern all weekend at 50%…I hope this gives you just the right nudge to give curved piecing a go if you haven’t tried it yet. Or, it gets you in the mood to start a fun new project if you are already a curvy master.
