Quilt in Progress: Curvy Blues

Last week was fun, right? Did you enjoy seeing the new Windsor Garden quilt pattern? You can never go wrong with a classic shape and modern layout and pieces big enough to show off your favorite fabrics. Hope you all share your versions of the new pattern!

This week: evaluating my design wall. Put up all the blocks for my Improv Design quilt in progress – the Blue One. These are the blocks I made for demonstrations and teaching in the class in September and I’m deciding where to go from here. If you missed the start of this Quilt in Progress, see more about it <<here>>.

So, I have nine squares started. They are not finished, so we still have lots of potential to add more shapes and more colors. Question is, should I keep going with the all blue-green color palette? True to form, I’ve been itching to add some hot pink and/or orange to it. I asked the class group about this idea and the vote was unanimous. BUT, I won’t tell you what they said because I want to get YOUR opinion. Tell me in the comments of this post if we keep going or add some spice.

The blocks with the most contrast so far are my favorite and I think the main thing to focus on moving forward is contrast. It needs contrast in both color and in curve shape sizes. I feel like I need to add more really big and really small curves, and some really skinny arcs. IDK, we shall see. The cool thing about this design is that you can keep going to make it super busy or stay more minimal with just a few shapes in each block. Really fun to play with and the more you work, the better you get at sewing those curved seams.

I have to tell you, when I made the original Pink One of this quilt, I pretty much fell in love with this adventurous way of quilt making. I’ve been calling it Precision Piecing; Improv Design because it is the perfect marriage of clean lines and craftsmanship – that the traditional quilter in me requires – and a fun, abstract improv look. The entire quilt is made using the Classic Curves Plus ruler….you can cut up to 19 different curve sizes with it, so it makes the process really easy!

I’m going to keep working on this one, probably into the next session of the Precision Curves; Improv Design class. I kind of figure it can keep getting bigger and evolving.

I would love to have you join me for the next class and make your own version! You’ll become a master of curved piecing, using your Classic Curves Plus ruler and have a ton of fun. Classes are live via Zoom meeting and I teach you step by step how to make a fabulous quilt. Next class dates are October 23, 25, 27, 2023 at 12pm each day. Learn more about the live class, here.

ALSO: I’ve added the option to purchase this class in its entirety to work through on your own. You’ll get all the lessons on video and pdf downloads right away, rather than joining the zoom classes live. Get the virtual class <<here>>

Don’t forget – give me your input: keep it in the blues or add some heat?

Happy Sewing,
