Quilt in Progress: A Blue One

I am absolutely thrilled and surprised at the response to my new virtual class offering – Precision Piecing; Improv Design – that opened for enrollment last week. The first session of our live class is coming up next week and I am very excitedly getting ready to welcome you into the studio.

Don’t worry! if this session doesn’t fit into your schedule, we will be having more classes soon, including more sessions of this one. If you want to be notified of new class offerings, enter your email <<here>> to get on that mailing list.

For the live sessions we are going to meet via Zoom, so you all will be coming from far and wide. One of my favorite thing about any type of group sewing is seeing what everyone chooses for their own project, color and fabric-wise. There is always such a beautiful array of taste in the groups and I love seeing a quilt come together in something completely different than I would choose!

Today, I wanted to share some peeks at what I’m working on for the class. Since my original sample quilt -The Pink One- is very bright and colorful, I decided to make the next version with a summer bundle of solids by Art Gallery Fabrics. It includes 23 fat quarters in different shades of green, aqua, and grey-blue. Reminds me of sea glass colors. Instead of having one base color like I did for the Pink One, my demo quilt will feature all different blocks using the fat quarters as the ‘background’ instead of one single color yardage. I’m excited to see if it works -hoping that having the colors in the same hue family will keep it from getting too chaotic- we will find out!

In the class, I’m teaching how to use the Classic Curves Plus ruler to make simple cuts in a range of sizes -the ruler can cut blocks in 19 size options- and use an improv design technique to create an original quilt that will be different for each person. This is a really fun way to play and explore color, shapes, and composition…all while mastering curved cutting and piecing.

So these photos give you an idea of the direction my demonstration pieces are going. These pieces are just the start, we will make more squares as we make the quilt together during the live sessions. What do you think of the (almost) monochromatic color scheme?

I have these blue bundles, as well as green/yellow, pink/purple, and rainbow bundles available if you want to make it super easy to start your quilt.

There’s still time to join the class and get your ruler. Our first live session is Wednesday, September 13 at 12pm EDT.

I just noticed that my clothes today match my fabric colors. Pretty fancy!
