How About a Picnic This Summer?

Picnic quilt by color girl quilts, curved piecing with classic curves ruler

Summer has officially arrived in our house. The kids are out of school, we’ve been on our bikes and they have gotten out the water balloons. Another exciting arrival: the brand new Picnic quilt pattern! This is the second full pattern available to accompany the Classic Curves Ruler.

Picnic introduces one of my all time favorite shapes: the orange peel. I don’t know why I love this block so much, but I think they are really fun to make and experiment with layouts and additions. I have many other patterns using this shape, see all available patterns <<here>>.

For the sample quilt on Picnic, I used a variety of prints from my stash of Cotton and Steel (RJR fabrics) as well as a few other scraps. Do you notice something about this quilt different from almost any other I have made? RED! I hardly ever use red in my quilts. I am loving that this has a different color palette for me, and I think the red works really well with the acid green and shades of blue. I also used Aurifil thread and Hobbs batting to finish it off. Quilting by Darby Myers of Quilted Squid.

The pattern includes three sizes: baby/throw, twin, and queen. The brilliant thing about Picnic is that it is so much easier than it looks! The Classic Curves Ruler makes cutting a breeze (no templates!) and the nice big pieces are great for showing off a favorite collection of prints. I think it would look great in a variety of color and fabric schemes: 30s reproductions for  sweet vintage look, batiks for contemporary drama, or scrappy bits and pieces for a snuggly favorite.

For those of you still trying to decide whether to take the leap into curved piecing, I hope you’ll decide to join me in making these fun quilts! I’m continuing to work on new patterns and quilts. The Classic Curves Ruler is such a useful tool, and it’s so much fun to use, too!

If you order your Classic Curves Ruler right now, you may get the Picnic pdf pattern with it for free. Just make sure your cart has the picnic pattern in with your ruler when you order and use coupon “picnic”. This is limited to fifteen orders, so get it fast!

Happy Summer!
