The last couple weeks, I have written about working on this little quilt as my “Quilt in Progress”, so I am happy to finally have it finished! This is a miniature (about 30″ square) of my original Eclipse quilt (pattern available here ). Honestly, I have so many quilts in progress, and a million more inside my head and sketch book, I don’t know what possessed me to re-make this quilt other than that I really love the design. It is a unique way to use curved piecing, which I really enjoy.
I also wanted to make something with these large-scale prints that I had in my stash and didn’t really have any ideas for them. I think this pattern is great for showing off the beautiful fabrics. Those floral prints are all from designs by Alison Glass for Andover Fabrics. Initially, I thought about having it professionally quilted, because I really like it and didn’t want to ruin it with my amateurish quilting (not to mention those many other quilt in progress to get to!). But I decided since it is small to to quilt it myself and challenge myself to practice my quilting a bit.
I used Aurifil thread, mostly in cream, but I did use a pink color to match that center star. I also used Hobbs Heirloom batting…just a side note: that batting is so nice for not creasing! I love that it is lightweight and thin (great for quilting), but it also doesn’t seem to hold creases after quilts are folded.
The quilting is mostly straight lines (firmly within my comfort zone) around the curves and stars. I wanted to quilt it quite closely for maximum texture and I really like how it looks and feels where there are lots of close lines; but then I got really crazy and decided to fill in the outer open areas with some free-motion swirls. This is where I can get into trouble, but despite some seriously uneven stitch-lengths going on, I am overall quite proud of myself for what I did and got that little bit of practice with free-motion quilting.
