A Star is Born!

In the last two years, my two best friends have become grandmothers. I love the opportunity to gift a quilt and this is my all time favorite  baby quilt pattern. This one went to baby Harry, and I love imagining him finding all the animals in these cute fabrics.

This four point star design had been on my bucket list for a while, so when I bought a Layer Cake of this cute Animal Crackers fabric collection, I figured it was perfect for to try out the stars. I didn’t know at the time that Creative Grids makes a great ruler specifically for making these star blocks, so I used home-made templates, BUT, once I discovered the ruler I really wanted to share it with you all.

<<watch video how-to here>>

Kitty Corner is ideal for fabrics you don’t want to cut up too small. You want the prints to be the star (pun intended) but still want an interesting piecing design. 10″ squares are ideal cuts for a quilt like this because each square is exactly the right amount of fabric for one star. With a pre-cut pack, you get a great variety of prints without added cost or leftovers from buying bigger cuts.

To make your own quilt like mine, but much easier, with the Kitty Corner ruler, read on.

To make a quilt that finishes 48″ x 56″ you will need:

— 1 set of pre-cut 10″ squares (or cut your own, a total of (42) 10″ squares)

— 2 1/4 yards neutral fabric for background (I used all black for my original quilt and a mix of black and white in the video)

— a Kitty Corner Ruler *available here*

In the video, I’ll show you how to use the ruler to cut the prints and background fabric into the shapes for the star points and give you lots of ideas for making your quilt unique. You guys know that I love to dream up lots of options, and this video is loaded with extras!

  1. Cut each 10″ square into (4) 5″ squares. Keep the sets together. Each set will make one star block.
  2. From background fabric: cut (14) strips, 5 1/4″ x width of fabric. Then sub-cut into (168) rectangles, 3 1/2″ x 5 1/4″

In the video you’ll see exactly how to use the Kitty Corner ruler to make quick work of cutting the shapes…and if you’ve ever tried cutting and piecing half rectangle triangles, you know it can be tricky to get just right. The ruler has markings to make it super easy to match up the fabrics, sew, and square up the blocks for perfect points. BONUS: the ruler is designed to allow you to make the blocks in a range of sizes. So while I did mine with 10″ squares, you can choose your block size based on fabric you have on hand or the finished quilt you want to make.

Are you excited to try this? I promise it’s easy and these blocks are soooo satisfying to sew…especially when you have fabric THIS cute!

Such a cute quilt! We often don’t think about using black for baby quilts, but that’s a great choice because babies see the contrast so well and can enjoy the quilt right away.

I love comments! thanks for stopping by.
