Stars in Our Eyes

UPDATE: Giveaway finished. The winners are Paula (Fortune quilt pattern), Debbie (Sparkle quilt pattern), and Fran (Fly Over quilt pattern). Thank you all for participating!

I love the emoji that’s the little smiley face with stars in place of the eyes. Do you know it? I think it sums up how I feel about so much of my quilting life.

Eclipse quilt by Color girl Quilts, curved piecing with classic curves ruler

I hope you can relate. Let’s all try to keep stars in our eyes at all times. But when it comes to quilting, is there anything more classic and wonderful than a star? Besides circles and other curvaceous shapes, I can safely say that star quilts are my favorite patterns to imagine, design, and make.

Last week, I was packing up my quilts and preparing to visit a guild for talk and show at their regular meeting and then an all day workshop. I enjoy this packing process each time I travel — it gives me a chance to revisit the quilts I’ve made in past years, reminding me of the memories that each quilt holds. This time, I was really feeling the star quilts and wanted to share some of those with you this week.

One of the things that makes stars so much fun is that there are endless possible variations. Imagine the star quilts you’ve made or seen in shows. There’s the classics like Ohio Star or Sawtooth Star (shown above in Fortune ). The scrappy ones made with ‘strings’, or from raiding the scrap bag for whatever is on hand. You can make stars with 4, 6, 8 points and more! My all time favorite traditional quilt pattern is the Feather Star. For non-traditional stars, my personal favorite is making stars from hexagons like the Aurora quilt:

Do you have a favorite star quilt pattern? Pull it out and take a look with new eyes: it would look completely different made up in that new fabric collection you just brought home. Could you experiment with color placement to make it look like a new design? I don’t know about you but whenever I get my quilts out or look at patterns, I love imagining what I would do differently if I made the pattern again, or if I haven’t made it yet…well, then the sky is the limit!

Who wants to make a star quilt?

Visit the Color Girl Quilts shop pattern page and choose your favorite pattern that features stars. Tell me which one you chose in the comments below. I’ll choose three people to send their chosen pattern.
