Introducing the Rocky Road Quilt Pattern

I was tempted to be my cheesy self and make the title of this post something about the ‘flavor of the month’ or being ‘sweet’ but I’m restraining myself. Sometimes the best way to get the word out is just get right to the point. It’s been a while since we had a new quilt pattern at Color Girl Quilts and Rocky Road is so fun, it was worth the wait.

Rocky Road is the newest star to join the constellation of shiny patterns in the shop and this week it’s on sale! There, we had to get a bit of silliness in there, I can’t resist (-: But seriously, it’s a stellar pattern, get yours while it’s on sale.

Let me tell you all about the quilt before I completely lose you. I’ll be serious now.

+”Ugh. I’m terrible at paper foundation piecing!”     I’ve seen a lot of quilt patterns that use this technique and don’t include instructions…you have to already know how to do it. This pattern includes COMPLETE text instructions and detailed illustrations for successful paper piecing. I think you’ll find you CAN do it with the right pattern.

+”PFP creates so much wasted fabric!”     It’s true you’ll need more fabric for making a PFP quilt than if you can simple rotary cut rectangles and squares. But…I’ll show you a technique to minimize the wasted fabric AND make the piecing easier. It’s and especially good way of piecing for those long skinny triangles and  weirdly angular pieces that can be tricky.

The sample quilt you see on the pattern cover was sewn by my mother –she is the BEST helper and quilting companion a quilt designer daughter could ask for. She’s my biggest fan and always shows so much enthusiasm for quilting with me and volunteers to make quilts from my patterns. We chose a selection of inky blue prints for the stars. Each star is made up of the same fabric, but the stars are different throughout the quilt. I like how this adds a bit of movement and keeps your eye looking across the pattern, especially since the fabrics actually range from dark navy to a tad teal and aqua.

The complimentary solid colors are pieced scrappy in the sample, but for simplicity sake the pattern suggests using four colors. This means you don’t need to buy a ton of different colors (and have wasted leftovers) if you don’t have a stash of bright solids. It also keeps the piecing much simpler, but if you want to make yours with more variety you totally can! I’d love to see a version using scraps without any planned layout to the colors.

Pattern includes three size options and is easy to adapt to your own preferred size and shape by making more or fewer blocks.

In the coming weeks I’ll share some examples of Rocky Road done up in different colors and layouts to give you ideas so make sure you are receiving email updates from me, if not, <<sign up here>> . I bet you already have a selection of fabrics that would be perfect for it!

Rocky Road pattern is on sale this week only. Get your copy today!
