The Song of Sirena, A Finished Quilt!

This month is all about finishing our projects, right? Well, I am super happy to finally share a quilt I finished (even though it was last month) to be displayed at Quilt Market in Portland in May. Do you remember the little quilt I made with Tallinn fabrics to celebrate Jessica Swift’s first fabric collection with Art Gallery Fabrics? Well, Jessica has a new collection coming called Sirena, and it couldn’t be more fun and fresh.

First of all, I love the name of the collection, Sirena. A Siren in Greek mythology was a creature of the sea who used enchanting music to lure unlucky sailors to their demise. These colorful prints reflect a seafaring theme with adorable illustrations of mermaids (the Sirens, but nice ones), whales, pineapples and beach flora. I kind of can’t get enough of the colors. Not a true primary color in sight, but just the right shades of violet, inky blue, lemony yellow, pink and even a touch of black.

Okay, enough about the fabric…you can see how happy it is. The quilt! This is the first time I tried sewing full half-circle blocks rather than making two quarter circle (drunkards’ path) squares and sewing them together to make a half circle.

To make the blocks like this, you can use the same concept as the full circle block. Either make full circles and cut them in half, or cut fabrics in rectangles first, then fold in half and cut the half-circle. <<Click Here to See Tutorial>>

The curves are super easy and accurate when cut with the Classic Curves Ruler. I am loving playing with all the different shapes and designs that can be made with it! I pieced this quilt with Aurifil thread (I use 50 weight in an off-white shade for general piecing) and finished it with Hobbs batting. This one has a new Hobbs product in it that is in between the usual low loft we use for quilting and the high loft used for puffy blankets. It is super soft and just a little fluffy so you can see the quilting texture a bit more than usual. I did the straight line quilting with transparent thread. I really like using that for my quilts so it doesn’t stand out against any of the colors or prints.
