So, I was really excited to get my hands on Pat Bravo’s recent collection, Heartland, for Art Gallery Fabrics…the prints are beautiful and the colors are so soft and serene. I always love a primary color scheme: shades of yellow, pink (I am not a red person), and blue. I met Pat at Market in May in Salt Lake City and her booth for Heartland was amazing, as usual, so I knew I wanted to make something with her beautiful fabrics.
This is one of those quilts that did not end up as I had planned. I had a design sketched and planned for hexagons and even started cutting it out: large whole hexagons and triangles that would be set together to make a secondary pattern.
I didn’t end up liking the layout combining triangles and hexagons…the contrast wasn’t right and the design got lost in the prints of the fabrics (#quiltfail )
So I played about with several different layouts and added the diamond shapes to make the triangles bigger…and landed on this pretty star block!
Then I was faced with another dilemma: how to set the stars together? Again, I auditioned a couple of ideas, including setting triangles between, smaller stars alternated in…but none were right. In the end, I decided to just sew them together as is, honeycomb style. My mom was here visiting for bit and she finished piecing the top for me.
So this quilt was quite a process, but lots of fun. It’s never bad when you get to be sewing with beautiful fabrics, Aurifil thread, and solving a design challenge! I can’t wait to show you the finished quilt.

I would love to see a pattern made for this. What a great save for all the work and beautiful fabric you started with. It’s all ways wonderful when a “failure” turns out even better than what you started out to do. I can see so many possibilities for this pattern!
