You may know that I am a huge fan of designer Katarina Roccella’s fabrics, so I have been pretty excited about her latest collection, Lavish (Art Gallery Fabrics), since Market last fall. I feel like it didn’t get a lot of attention, but these fabrics are gorgeous!
A couple of weeks ago, I had a new bundle of Lavish and was trying to decide what I wanted to make with the prints. It occurred to me that I haven’t done a really challenging, super fun piecing quilt in a while.
I did a little brainstorming for design ideas, and, not surprisingly came up with this new design using my favorite technique: curved piecing! I love this “pod” shape from the classic Orange Peel quilt pattern, and I thought is would be fun to add a secondary design by piecing the background fabrics. For my blocks, each background is half solid fabric in tonal print (for maximum contrast) and half is pieced with gray and white strips.
I have nine blocks sewn so far, and just have the half-blocks for the edges. I am so excited to get this top finished! It has been a fun one and definitely fulfilled my urge to challenge myself a bit.
I have a bit more to do to prepare for Quilt Market this coming week, but hoping to get this one all pieced very soon. Hope you all have some quilting time this week, too.

I am star-struck (again!) What a fantastic design: you sure have an amazing way of designing and also picking the right colors and fabrics to make the most of the design! You should at least bring a picture of it to Market to show to potential customers/marketers. I hope you have great luck at getting some good contacts at Market!! 🙂 Hugs, H
Very nice! I get different reads of shapes depending on the contrast between the background and the orange peels. It keeps my eyes moving looking for shapes that appear and then I can’t find them again. Looks like another great hit!
