There is some beautiful new fabric are coming to town! AvantGarde is the brand new collection from Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics. If you have been following this blog for long, you probably know I am a huge fan of Katarina’s prints. Avante Garde is a masterpiece of artsy abstract prints and big, bold color.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a few of the prints and I am going to make a quilt for the AvantGarde tour to promote the fabric in January. I decided I wanted to play up the strong geometric shapes and big prints and do some large scale hexagons. I am cutting the hexagons in half in order to piece the design I want in the finished quilt..but in the meantime, it’s fun to play around with layout options!
Hexagons are so versatile in making unique quilt designs. They look awesome simply cut and then pieced back together (see This Post), but there is a fabulous array of options if you cut them up and piece the components. One of my all time favorite quilts is Pops!, which is pieced hexagons (see it Here).
I really like the looks of adding contrasting triangles with hexagons (see This Quilt). Wouldn’t the layout above be fun to play with? You could do low-volume half hexagons with bright colored triangles (or the reverse), or use all the same fabric in each row of half hexagons…the ideas are endless!
Stay tuned next month for the AvantGarde blog tour showcasing a number of projects using these beautiful prints, including the full reveal of my hexagon quilt.
Happy Christmas week! the countdown has begun at our house (well, it actually started a couple months ago…)
