I cannot believe we are in the last month of the school year and the last month of making our sampler blocks! This month I decided not to choose a theme and just make my favorites of the blocks that I haven’t yet made from Tula Pink’s City Sampler book, 100 Modern Quilt Blocks.
If you are just joining, I have done a monthly series this year, making four blocks from Tula’s book each month (see all the posts, Here) and also providing you readers with instructions to make four blocks that I designed (see all the tutorials, Here). I have discovered recently that there are actually a few out there sewing along with me (surprise, surprise!) and that is so fun to hear.
This month, I made blocks #48, 55, 19, and 87 (above, clockwise from top left) from the Tula Pink book. I think these blocks are really cute and wanted to make them for the last month. On block #48 (the one with the diamond shapes), I did construct mine a bit differently from the book. Instead of using all half-square triangles, I cut the blue and the pink prints as 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, then sewed them together on the diagonal. The yellow were cut as triangles, and sewn to the ends of the rectangles, then I trimmed away the excess rectangle fabric at the corner. This isn’t a better way than the book, it just seemed simpler to me and I wanted the diamond shapes to be all one piece of fabric.
This coming week, I will publish instructions to make four more blocks. Then we will have 72 (!) blocks finished and ready to sew them up into a quilt this summer. Watch for the Summer Blockbuster 2015 to run during July.
If you have orphan blocks or a block of the month group finished and need ideas for setting them together into a finished quilt design you might want to join in, or try my past Summer Blockbuster series: 2013, and 2014.
Happy sewing,
Sharon
