I got a very interesting package in the mail the other day. It was from FabricWorm, but I hadn’t ordered anything….Of course, I opened it and was thrilled to find a copy of Elizabeth Hartman’s Aviatrix Medallion pattern! I have wanted to make this quilt since last spring when Elizabeth started a quilt-along with it, but just never made the time. So, who was the sweet one who sent me the pattern? My wonderful sister in quilting (and genetics), Emily! Most know her as Em, and she is an original color girl/courageous quilter!
Because this quilt has been on my “to-do” list, naturally I already had a bin full of fabric ready for it (doesn’t everyone do that? squirrel away the perfect fabric for that special “some day” project?)
I am starting with a fat eighth bundle of Vanessa Christensen’s prints for Moda fabrics, “Color Me Happy” (fall 2013). I love the sweet and cheery prints in this collection and it has a perfect selection of light, medium and darks in distinct colors like pink, blue, aqua, green, and gray.
Elizabeth’s original pattern was made with all solid fabrics and it is gorgeous! But I think I want to do the opposite: all prints. I am really loving the extra-scrappy look lately: lots of prints and using value to differentiate the patchwork.
Of course, the Moda fabrics bundle was just a starting point. I am adding all my favorites from the stash, too.
I am such a huge fan of Elizabeth Harman’s quilting style and so excited to start this quilt! I am hoping to finish my Mini Marcelle Medallion quilt top this weekend and then it will be up next! It’s funny, this is almost exactly a year since I finished my original Marcelle Medallion top and started my Midnight at the Oasis medallion quilt. Did I mention I like medallion quilts?

I’m looking forward to seeing how this quilt will look in prints! I’m sure it’s going to be beautiful. Love medallion quilts, too.
What an awesome surprise gift! It will be wonderful to see how this translates into an all print version; your fabric pull is glorious!
Surprise post is the best!
