Quilt Flashback: 2004

I have been quilting for a pretty long time (for someone my age, that is). My mom, aunt and Grandmother quilted and sewed all during my childhood and I made my first quilt as a kid. I didn’t really get seriously into it until after I graduated from college in 2001.

Last month when I visited my sister in Seattle, I got to revisit this quilt that I made for her and Sean (my BIL) back in 2004. The leaves were pieced with hand-dyed fabrics in solid colors, with bits of batiks mixed in.
I was in a phase where I loved piecing elaborate borders for my quilts. I remember figuring out the math for cutting the strips and triangles to create this one. It was tricky!

Sadly, the hand-dyed fabrics have not held up well to washing in that the colors are very faded. Some of the leaves don’t show up very much, but the quilt has the wonderful, soft, drapey feel that they only get after lots of love.

I remember searching many shops for the perfect piece to use as the focus fabric in between the leaf blocks. I was really happy when I found the orangey autumn leaf piece at a shop here in Columbus.

It is pretty remarkable when I think about all the quilts I have made. I have had many phases (I have the stash to prove it!) and styles. I like seeing one of my older quilts like this one and remembering the story that went into making it. Glad it is still being loved.

How wonderful to be able to revisit a quilt you made quite a while ago. I really like the way the center part merges with the border, and those great purple squares.
