Sometimes the most basic things are the best: half square triangles are the building blocks for countless classic quilt blocks, they stand on their own beautifully, all lined up like soldiers or organized into pinwheels, and they are super easy to sew!![]()
The newest video in the Basics of Quiltmaking playlist on Color Girl Youtube is everything half square triangles: how to calculate measurements so you can make whatever size you want, need or have fabric for and how to sew them using four different techniques. The focus for this tutorial is on turning a variety of scraps into useable blocks.
For every scrap, small / medium / large, there is a technique for making an HST square with the greatest efficiency. In my example, we will make 2″ finished HST squares from your smallest scrap to fabrics as large as fat eights and beyond, all by choosing the technique that makes best use of the fabric. You’ll learn how to calculate measurements and cut for any size you might want or need.
So if you have scraps, need HST’s for making a certain pattern, or just want to add this essential skill to your quilting toolbox, this video is for you!
