For the Love of Fabric: Primary Colors

I have the opportunity to participate in a blog hop that starts on Monday. Each stop will include a tutorial on making quilt-making quicker and/or easier. The whole thing is organized by Amy of
Diary of a Quilter, so be sure and stop back on Monday.
So, for my tutorial project, I need fabric! Today I started pulling fabric for my project and decided to do it with primary colors.
When it comes to choosing a color scheme for your quilt, you can’t go wrong with the primary colors: Red, Yellow, and Blue. They look great together as well as with neutrals and other colors.
I do confess, though, that I am not a fan of Red. You will not find much red in my stash or in many of my recent quilts. I do, however, LOVE pink!

Given this preference, I decided to tick my “primary colors” a couple of notches clockwise on my color wheel: my “red” is really pink-purple, blue has a bit of green and my yellow tilts toward gold.
good combo, right?
The next thing I need is a neutral. You definitely can’t go wrong with white like I have there at the top. White makes the already-bright colors pop even more. I think it brings them back to “primary” more than any other companion.
If you know me, you know I am a big fan of gray. My primary colors also look fabulous with the dark and light grays, above. This combination makes the colors seem more muted, more “grown up” (as opposed to the primary colors in your pre-school crayon box).

Whoa! not so neutral, but don’t they also look great with a bright secondary (solid) color? I like green with just about everything. In my world, it could be a neutral.

And of course, Black and White. I wouldn’t be my mother’s daughter if I didn’t audition my fabrics with a black and white print. I love this picture!
I made my decision and started sewing today, and taking LOTS of pictures. I hope you will visit on Monday and check out my project and tutorial, as well as the others in the group.
What colors are you adding to your fabric collection?

  1. Nice choices. Sometimes the funnest part of a project is selecting the fabrics! I, too, struggle to use red in my quilt projects (although I’ll be starting a project next week using Kona Chinese Red, which is unusual!). I’m leaning toward teals and purples a lot lately, myself. Looking forward to what you have in store next week!
